AI interview assistants, grouped by when they actually help you
Last updated September 9, 2026.
Every AI interview tool markets itself as "AI-powered interview help," but that hides a real difference: when it helps. Some work only during the live call. Some are built for rehearsing beforehand, with no real interview involved. In theory, a third kind could review your performance after a real interview and give you feedback. We grouped six general-purpose tools by which of those three they actually document — and found one bucket is empty.
Methodology
This is a categorization built from each vendor's own public pricing and feature pages, checked July–August 2026 — the same fact set already used on our broader tool comparison, re-organized around a different question. It is not a hands-on test of every product: we didn't run a live interview through each tool to confirm suggestion quality, and a vendor's own feature page can't tell you how well a "practice mode" actually works, only that one exists. Where a tool is InterviewBeacon's own, it's held to the same standard as the rest, including stating what it doesn't do. Vendors change features over time — check the current page before relying on this for a purchase decision.
The three categories
- Live help. The tool listens to your actual interview call and suggests an answer while you're on it. This is the category every tool here falls into, at minimum.
- Pre-call practice. A rehearsal or mock-interview mode you run before the real thing — no live interviewer, just simulated questions and (typically) feedback on your answers.
- Post-call analysis. Reviewing your performance on an actual interview after it happened — the kind of feedback a human coach might give afterward. We looked for this specifically and didn't find it documented on any of the six tools below.
At a glance
| Tool | Live help | Pre-call practice | Post-call analysis |
|---|---|---|---|
| InterviewBeacon | Yes | No | No |
| Cluely | Yes | No | No |
| Final Round AI | Yes | Yes — mock-interview mode | No |
| LockedIn AI | Yes | Yes — Mock Interview Simulator | No |
| OphyAI | Yes | No | No |
| Hedy | Yes (general meeting assistant, not interview-specific) | No | No |
Interview Coder is excluded from this table — it's built specifically for live coding interviews, not the general-profession scope of this comparison. See the full roundup for where it fits.
The finding: nobody in this set does post-call analysis
We expected a cleaner three-way split going in. What we actually found: every tool here is live-help-only, or live help plus a separate practice mode — none of the six documents reviewing a real interview after it happened. Final Round AI and LockedIn AI both offer built-in mock-interview practice, which gets you feedback on asimulated session before a real interview, not an analysis of how you actually did on one. If genuine post-interview feedback is what you're looking for, this category — at least the tools we checked — doesn't have it yet; you'd likely need a human mock-interviewer or coach for that specifically.
What this means for choosing a tool
You only want help during the real call. Cluely, OphyAI, and InterviewBeacon are live-only, with no rehearsal layer to pay for if you don't want one.
You also want to rehearse beforehand. Final Round AI and LockedIn AI both bundle a practice mode with their live tool — see our full comparison for pricing and trade-offs on each.
You want feedback after a real interview. None of the tools here cover this today. It's worth knowing that gap exists before assuming any AI interview assistant will close the loop for you post-interview.
InterviewBeacon's own scope is deliberately narrow: live help only, BYOK, local transcription, a one-time $79 license. For the full picture including price and platform details, see the best AI interview assistant roundup or the live interview copilot explainer.
FAQ
What's the difference between live help, practice mode, and post-interview analysis?
Live help suggests an answer during the actual interview call. Practice/rehearsal mode runs mock interview sessions beforehand, with no real interviewer involved. Post-interview analysis would review your actual performance after a real interview and give feedback — none of the tools in this comparison document that feature today.
Do any AI interview assistants offer post-interview analysis?
Not among the tools we checked. Every one is either live-help-only or live help plus a separate pre-call practice mode — none publicly documents reviewing your performance on a real interview after the fact. If that's what you're after, you likely won't find it in this category yet.
Which AI interview assistants have a practice or rehearsal mode?
Final Round AI and LockedIn AI both document a built-in mock-interview practice mode. Cluely, OphyAI, and InterviewBeacon don't — they're live-help-only. Hedy is a general meeting assistant, not an interview-practice tool.
Is InterviewBeacon a practice tool or a live tool?
Live only. InterviewBeacon listens to your actual interview call and suggests an answer in the moment — it has no rehearsal or mock-interview mode. If you specifically want practice beforehand, Final Round AI or LockedIn AI currently cover that; InterviewBeacon doesn't try to.
How was this comparison put together?
By reading each vendor's own public feature and pricing pages, not by hands-on testing every product. It reuses the same fact set already checked for our broader roundup — see the methodology note below for exactly what that does and doesn't verify.
